Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS)

How does PBIS work?

PBIS stands for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports. It's not a program or a curriculum; it is a comprehensive, evidence-based framework used by schools to create a positive, predictable, and safe school climate.

It works primarily by focusing on prevention and instruction rather than just punishment. The core idea is that you must explicitly teach behavior just as you teach academics.

At Charlotte Harbor Center, we believe that when students feel supported, they truly soar! We use proven, research-backed strategies to create a school culture where everyone feels safe, seen, and celebrated.

Through PBIS and our EAGLES Expectations, we don't just teach lessons—we foster growth. Whether it’s an academic breakthrough, a social win, or a behavioral milestone, we make sure our students' hard work is recognized with exciting incentives and heartfelt celebrations. Because here, every accomplishment counts toward a brighter, more successful future! 🌟

3 Tiered System | PBIS

Goals of PBIS

✨ 1. Creating a Culture of "Yes!"

We want our school to be a place where students are caught being good.

📚 2. Boosting Learning Time

When expectations are clear and the environment is predictable, teachers can spend less time "policing" and more time teaching.

🤝 3. Building Life Skills

We explicitly teach social-emotional skills—like how to manage frustration or how to work as a team—that will help our students succeed long after they graduate.

⚖️ 4. Consistency for Every Student

Whether a student is in the classroom, the cafeteria, or on the playground, the rules don't change. Our goal is a "no-surprises" campus where every staff member supports every student in the exact same way.

🎉 5. Celebrating the Journey

One of our biggest goals is to celebrate milestones—big and small—in academics, social skills, and personal behavior. When we celebrate together, we grow together.

Better Behavior + More Instruction + Constant Encouragement = Unstoppable Students!

School-Wide Behavior Plan

  • We are 'Positivity First!' We believe in catching our students doing things right. By spending our energy promoting and celebrating great choices, we create a campus where responsible behavior isn't just expected—it’s the norm. We’re not just managing a classroom; we’re building a community of EAGLES who love to soar!"
  • We believe behavior is communication. If a student is struggling, we don't just look at what they are doing—we look at what they are needing. By becoming 'Behavior Detectives,' we can provide the right support at the right time to help every EAGLE thrive."
  • We believe every moment is a teachable moment. When our EAGLES struggle with a choice, we prioritize 'Learning over Leaving.' By using instructional consequences, we give our students the tools they need to make a better choice next time!

What can parents do to help their child stay on the path to positive behavior?

  • Take a few minutes to review our EAGLES Expectations and the CCPS Code of Conduct with your child. When they see that you value these standards, they will too!
  • The "After-School Download" Instead of asking "How was school?", try specific questions that prompt a positive reflection
    • "Who did you help today?" (Empathy)

    • "What was something hard that you kept trying at?" (Effort)

    • "Did you earn any EAGLE bucks today? Tell me why!"

  • A successful day starts the night before! A consistent bedtime and a punctual arrival at school are the best ways to ensure your child is Ready to Learn. When a child isn't rushed, they are much better at staying calm and making good choices.

  • Your child’s teacher is your biggest ally. Keep the lines of communication open! Whether it’s a quick email or a check-in on the "Where's the Bus" app to coordinate timing, staying connected prevents small issues from becoming big hurdles.

  • Look for ways to use our EAGLES Expectations in your daily life.

EAGLES Expectations

PBIS, together with our EAGLES Expectations, students will be empowered to become respectful, responsible, and resilient members of our school community, ready to soar."
